Case outline
At Walsingham, pilgrimage is presented as a lived symbol of the Christian journey from earth to heaven. The shrine places the incarnation at the centre of the visit: the Holy House recalls Nazareth, while the statue of Mary serves as a focus for devotion and a visual aid.
The case turns belief into movement, place, prayer and image. It also exposes an easy muddle: devotion to Mary is not, in the shrine's account, worship of Mary. This example is especially relevant to Catholic and Anglo-Catholic practice; pilgrimage is more than a religious holiday, but it is not a universal Christian duty.
