The argument
The ship is only the instrument. The argument is about what the word same commits us to when every material part can be replaced.
Material, form, function, memory and social recognition each claim to preserve identity. The reconstructed ship forces them into conflict. Whichever ship you name as the original, another plausible rule points elsewhere.
The same fight returns in personal identity, restored buildings, political institutions and communities transformed by migration or revolution. A theory of persistence earns its place by surviving the hardest case.
